First Micro-TESE Assisted Pregnancy in Jammu & Kashmir Achieved at Indira IVF Jammu

Jammu & Kashmir : In a significant fertility treatment milestone for the region, a 33-year-old couple from Jammu has achieved a successful pregnancy following the first Micro-TESE based assisted reproduction case performed at Indira IVF clinic in Jammu. The case highlights how advanced male infertility procedures, combined with assisted reproductive techniques, can help couples facing severe fertility challenges achieve positive outcomes, particularly in cases involving azoospermia.

The couple, both aged 33, had been married for one year and sought medical consultation after facing difficulty in conceiving. Medical evaluation identified Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in the female partner and azoospermia, a condition where sperm are absent in the semen, in the male partner, thus affecting conception.

Dr. Manisha Bhagat, IVF Specialist at Indira IVF Jammu, said, “The case involved male infertility due to azoospermia, which required a planned and stepwise treatment approach. Azoospermia remains more prevalent than many realise, and successful outcomes depend heavily on timely diagnosis and the right treatment pathway. With Micro-Dissection Testicular Sperm Extraction (MD-TESE), sperm retrieval rates can reach as high as 70%, offering hope to many azoospermic men to achieve the chance of having their own biological child. In the first cycle, only a limited number of sperms could be retrieved through TESA, and the embryos formed during ICSI arrested early. In the subsequent cycle, micro-dissection testicular sperm extraction (Micro-TESE) helped retrieve better quality sperm, which were used with the previously frozen oocytes, leading to the formation of four good-quality blastocysts.”

Following embryo development, two blastocysts were selected for transfer, which later led to successful implementation. The couple is now on their 21st week of pregnancy, with cardiac activity.

This outcome highlights how careful assessment and planned treatment strategies can support couples experiencing infertility, particularly in cases involving conditions such as PCOS and azoospermia.
