First corneal transplantation performed in GMC Jammu

JAMMU, Feb 3: In a landmark achievement, a team of doctors from Opthalmology department of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu today performed for the first time ocular penetrating, keratoplasty (corneal transplantation) on two patients.
The surgery was performed on two patients, one a male of age about 64 years and other 14-years-old female, both suffering from blindness. The team which operated the patients was headed by Dr Dinesh Gupta, Prof and Head, Department of Opthalmalogy and comprised of Dr Satish Gupta (Professor), Dr Ashok Sharma (Professor), Dr Sanjay Kai and others.
The surgical team of GMC Jammu independently conducted the two surgeries with their competence and surgical skills, and no assistance was taken from outside the institution.
Minister for Health and Medical Education, Bali Bhagat lauded the surgical team of the institution for their success. He also appreciated Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu, Dr Sunanda Raina for her initiative in this direction.
Commenting on this landmark achievement of the institution, GMC principal said that with these two successful surgeries, corneal transplantation will become a regular affair for GMC Jammu now onwards after the general public comes forward for eye donation. She said that the date for eye donation camp will be announced soon.
“This has opened a new horizon and hope for the people of J&K and particularly people of Jammu region, who are willing for eye donation and corneal transplantation for the needy”, Dr Sunanda added.
