SRINAGAR, Mar 10: At least seven shops were completely destroyed in a devastating fire that broke out at the Maisuma market in Srinagar in the wee hours today.
An official said that the fire, which started at around 3:30 a.m., engulfed a shopping complex owned by Khurshid Ahmed Dar, resulting in the complete destruction of six shops while one shop suffered partial damage. “The cause of the fire is still unknown and is currently under investigation by the authorities,” he said.
He added that the fire was eventually put out by firefighters with the help of police and locals, who worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. However, he said, the damage had already been done, and officials are currently assessing the quantum of loss caused by the incident.
The locals said that the fire broke out on the first floor of the building and quickly spread to other floors, damaging a total of seven shops. “Four shops were completely gutted on the first floor, while three shops on the third floor suffered damages,” they said.
The affected shops include Princo Electric, owned by Riyaz Ahmad Khan; IM Enterprises, owned by Irfan Shafi Gattoo and Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, ‘Canniez Petz Care owned by Riyaz Ahmad Bhat; and Paradise Engineering, owned by the proprietor of the building, Khursheed Ahmad Dar.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case and started an investigation into the cause of the fire.
