Srinagar, Oct 2: A Border Security Force jawan was killed and another injured tonight as militants tried to storm an Army base in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla, Imtiaz Hussain told Excelsior that a group of militants’ tried to storm 46 Rashtriya Rifles camp of Army at Janbazpora in Baramulla district of North Kashmir, that also houses a company of 40 battalion of BSF.
The SSP said that the militants fired at a BSF bunker on the periphery of the camp killing one BSF jawan and injuring another. He said that firing has stopped and whole area has been cordoned off.
Hussain, however, said that militants’ attempt to storm into the Army base has been foiled.
Army wrote on twitter: “Baramulla incident situation contained and under control @adgpi.”
Sources said that at least 5-6 militants came in a boat through river Jhelum and entered Gulnar Park that is adjacent to the 46-RR Army camp. They struck at the BSF bunker to force their entry into the Army camp that also houses a company of 40th battalion of BSF.
However, their attempt to enter the camp has been foiled and some of the militants managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
Another source said that two militants have been killed near the fence of the camp. However, no bodies were recovered yet.
The firing has stopped and entire area has been cordoned-off and man hunt launched against the militants responsible for attack on the camp.
The security forces had input about militants planning to carry out strike in Baramulla town for last several weeks as they had continuous information about presence of militants in and around the town but they couldn’t carry out operation due to unrest.
This is the second attack on Army in Baramulla town since August 17. Militants on August 17 ambushed an Army convoy in the town killing two Armymen and one policeman.
The attack on Army convoy was carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit and sources said that tonight’s attack may also be handiwork of the Jaish.
