Fidayeen attack: 3 security force personnel martyred, 2 injured in Pulwama

SRINAGAR:  Two CRPF personnel and a constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police were martyred and two other injured in a fidayeen attack on District Police Lines (DPL) in south Kashmir district of Pulwama in the wee hours today.

Meanwhile, mobile internet service of all cellular companies, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), has been suspended since early this morning as a precautionary measure to prevent spread of any rumours.

A CRPF spokesperson said that a fidayeen group stormed into DPL Pulwama around 0315 hrs after lobbing grenades and resorted to heavy firing on security guards.

He said five security force personnel– two policemen and three CRPF jawans — were injured in the attack.

The injured were immediately taken to a local hospital, where one of them, identified as police constable Imtiyaz Ahmad Sheikh, succumbed.

The other injured were later referred to 92 Army Base Hospital in Srinagar, where a Constable of 182 battalion and Head Constable of 183 battalion of CRPF succumbed, he said.

The heavily-armed militants later entered a building in C block in the DPL, he said.

Locals said that they have heard loud explosion followed by heavy smoke in the DPL.

The entire area, including orchards, has been sealed with the deployment of additional security forces rushed from nearby camps. Security force and police personnel have also been deployed in the main town and other tehsil headquarters in the district to prevent any law and order problem.

Meanwhile, media persons were not allowed to go near the area and residents in the nearby villages were directed to remain indoors.

This was the first fidayeen attack after security forces launched ‘operation all out’ against militants in Kashmir Valley.

However, in June this year CRPF foiled a fidayeen attack on Sumbal, Bandipora camp by killing four militants.

This month, security forces killed 23 militants, including seven infiltrators, in the Kashmir valley. However, six security personnel and seven civilians also lost their lives during the period. (AGENCIES)
