SRINAGAR : A constable of Jammu and Kashmir police and a CRPF jawan were killed and three other security personnel injured in a fidayeen attack on District Police Lines (DPL) in south Kashmir district of Pulwama in the wee hours today.
A CRPF spokesperson said that a fidayeen group stormed into DPL Pulwama around 0315 hrs after lobbing grenades and resorted to heavy firing on security guards.
He said five security force personnel, including two policemen and three CRPF jawans, were injured in the attack.
The injured were immediately taken to a local hospital, where one of them identified as police constable Imtiyaz Ahmad Sheikh, succumbed. The other injured were later referred to 92 Army Base Hospital in Srinagar.
Hospital sources said that one CRPF jawan has also succumbed. The heavily-armed militants later entered a building in C block in the DPL, he said.
The entire area, including orchards, has been sealed with the deployment of additional security forces rushed from nearby camps. Security force and police personnel have also been deployed in the main town and other tehsil headquarters in the district to prevent any law and order problem.
This was the first fidayeen attack after security forces launched ‘operation all out’ against militants in Kashmir valley.
However, in June this year, CRPF foiled a fidayeen attack on Sumbal, Bandipora camp by killing four militants.
Security forces have killed 23 militants, including seven infiltrators, in the Kashmir valley this month. However, six security personnel and seven civilians also lost their lives during the period. (agencies)
