Fencing along Indo-Bhutan border soon: SSB

NEW DELHI, Dec 21:
A stretch of 35.5-km of Indo-Bhutan border between Kokrajhar and Chirang of Assam adjacent to the Sarpang area of Bhutan will be fenced soon, a senior Sashastra Seema Bal official said.
This was approved by both governments after  talks between the two friendly nation’s DGs of the concerned border guarding forces,  keeping in view the  incidents of cross border kidnappings in which Bhutanese nationals were kidnapped and brought to Indian territory through that area.
However, post-2014, there has not been any report of  such incidents, but keeping in mind the security concerns a fence will be put in place in the region which will be 35.5-km long, a senior SSB official said on the sidelines  of 54th Raising Day celebrations on Wednesday here. Some of the small remaining stretch that has riverine gaps, can be covered with laser fencing in future. According to a senior SSB official, the laser fencing matter was in a nascent stage and it will take time to decide on it. DRDO had earlier demonstrated the laser fencing technology, but it was still under trial. (UNI)
