FCS&PD to distribute 32,660 qtl left out sugar to BPL consumers

JAMMU, May 30: After getting nod from the Finance Department, the Food, Civil Supplies and Public Distribution Department has decided to distribute about 32,660 quintals of sugar lying in three food stores of Jammu and in Srinagar among the BPL/ PHH category consumers in the state on the eve of Eid.
Official sources said that Govt issued directions to Director FCS&CA Jammu and Director Kashmir to release the quota at the rate of 500 gms per soul at the rate of Rs 25 per kilogram among the rationees of PHH category in the State on the eve of Eid ul-Fitr. It is said that there are about 74 lakh people under this category in the State.
It was also stressed upon all the concerned Assistant Directors and Teshil Supply Officers to ensure supply through POS devices at the sale outlets with at least 70 % Aadhar based authentication. It was also worked out that since Jammu requires 17390 quintals of sugar for distribution and Kashmir 19860 quintals quota for distribution among PHH consumers, for this purpose 9833 quintal sugar should be lifted from Jammu stores for Kashmir providence.
It may be recalled that issue was projected by Daily Excelsior recently, making disclosures that about 35,000 quintals of levy sugar was allowed to rot in three FCS&CA stores in Jammu and two in Srinagar since December 2018. The Govt had stopped sugar supply to the consumers from January this year in J&K but huge quota remained lying in stores and no decision was taken about its disposal since long. Huge quantity of sugar also got damaged in old stores.
Srinagar stores had shown 5437 quintals of left out sugar in stores after December 2018, whereas in Jammu FCS&CA stores nearly 27, 223 quintal sugar. More than 9800 quintal of levy sugar is being lifted from Jammu stores for distribution in Kashmir on Eid.
