SRINAGAR, Apr 26: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah today asserted that the true measure of a nation’s progress lies in fostering unity, safeguarding collective dignity, and aligning governance with the aspirations of its people.
Addressing a gathering, the NC president said leadership must guide society in the right direction while keeping people united. He expressed concern that successive governments at the Centre have attempted to divide the people of Jammu and Kashmir through policies that fragmented society, encouraged multiple power centres, and weakened the collective voice of the public. Such measures, he said, not only diluted unity but also curtailed the basic rights of the people.
Abdullah maintained that the people of Kashmir have consistently resisted such attempts. Referring to the 2025 elections, he said voters displayed political maturity by rejecting forces that sought to exploit public sentiment for personal gains. By reaffirming faith in the NC, he added, people sent a clear message against opportunistic politics and practices like horse-trading.
He further said that those who facilitated the abrogation of the region’s special status and its subsequent division for political advantage have been decisively rejected by the public. Urging the youth to study history, he highlighted the role of the NC in addressing poverty, backwardness, and deprivation, and in steering society towards dignity and progress through its policies and reforms.
Abdullah described the NC’s history as one rooted in sacrifice, struggle, and public service, stating that despite repeated challenges and conspiracies, the party has emerged resilient with the continued support of the people.
Referring to the NC-led Government formed about one and a half years ago, he said it promptly halted policies perceived as anti-people and ensured that governance decisions prioritized public welfare, development, and prosperity. He expressed confidence that with unity, awareness, and active public participation, J&K would move steadily towards lasting progress and stability.
