Farmers protest, demand resolution of electricity supply dispute

Srinagar, June 17: Scores of farmers from the Ajas and Chinpazpora areas of Bandipora took to the streets today to express their frustration with the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL).
The protest was ignited by the sudden and unexpected disruption of electricity supply to the lifting irrigation scheme at Churthangoo.
The farmers voiced their grievances, primarily focusing on a jurisdictional dispute between KPDCL Subdivision Hajin and KPDCL Division Bandipora.
They disclosed that the initial power agreement for the irrigation scheme at Churthangoo was registered under the jurisdiction of KPDCL Subdivision Hajin.
However, due to the relocation of the high-tension line and tubular poles from Babdub to Zadoo, the jurisdictional division was transferred from Sumbal to Bandipora.
The farmers expressed their initial satisfaction when KPDCL Bandipora provided electricity to the scheme for two days.
“Unfortunately, our optimism was short-lived as the power supply was abruptly disconnected,” they said.
The farmers further revealed that KPDCL officials cited that the scheme was not covered under the agreement of the Bandipora division.
Frustrated by the situation, the farmers emphasized that while some areas had been submerged due to excess water, there were others where no water was reaching.
They argued that it was the responsibility of KPDCL to facilitate the dewatering of inundated land. “However, with no action being taken, we are bearing the brunt,” they stated.
The farmers stressed the urgency of resolving the matter, highlighting that their crops were at stake.
To seek a resolution to their plight, the farmers have now appealed to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bandipora for intervention.
They urged the authorities to mediate and direct the concerned departments to promptly resolve the matter.
