UDHAMPUR, Feb 4: Demanding adequate compensation, small farmers in several Panchayats of Battal Balian protested against Agriculture Departmental for providing poor quality seed, which did not germinate.
These farmers of Battal Ballian and adjoining villages said there was complete loss of crop in about 400 kanals of land because of no germination of the seeds provided by the Agriculture Department and sown by them.
These farmers, including Kunj Lal, Shabir Hussian, Ex Panch Rumal Singh, Arjun Singh, Gian Singh, Ashwani Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Ex Panch Bodh Raj and Madhan Lal explained that they are not having any other sources of income and hence they were demanding compensation from the Agriculture Department.
“The field staff of Agriculture Department is completely responsible for huge loss to the farmers as the former did not give timely attention towards the failure of seed germination,” they alleged.
Meanwhile, District Develo-pment Commissioner Udhampur Dr Piyush Singla issued directions to the Agriculture department to look into the matter and assess loss to the farmers.
