It is quite heartening that the sensitive and advanced eye treatment facilities like corneal transplantation can be availed of by the deserving patients right in the Government Medical College Jammu and patients , need not go for this treatment outside Jammu . Department of Ophthalmology of GMC Jammu has been duly authorised and awarded with the registration of its Eye Bank , Corneal Transplant and Retrieval Facility by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act. The Act, in short , deals with transforming transplantation for needy citizens by promoting deceased organ donation .
The efforts of the Department of Ophthalmology and the entire team of the concerned Doctors of GMC Jammu in this respect deserve commendation and that the facilities can right away be started after some formalities were done in respect of corneal transplantation which earlier had been stopped due to reasons and issues now adequately addressed. However, eye donation , the “credit” into the account of the Eye Bank must too be coming forth to allow the “Debits” so that the Eye Bank remains active for ensuring transplantation on demand.
