KATHUA, Apr 26: In order to curb the menace of illicit distillation of liquor, the Excise Department Jammu today during a raid in Hiranagar tehsil of Kathua district destroyed 1950 kilograms of Lahan & 70 bottles of illicit liquor.
The raid was conducted in the villages of Sunjwan, Persochak, Chhibachak & Banyari by the Excise sleuths as the Department has tightened its noose on violators of the various provisions of the J&K Excise Act in entire Jammu division.
The raid was conducted on the directions of the Excise Commissioner Mohd. Javed Khan and under the supervision of Deputy Excise Commissioner (Executive), Jammu Ghanshyam Singh, by the Team of Excise sleuths from Kathua led by ETO Excise Range Kathua, Sandeep Gupta & ETO Eradication wing Jammu, . Suraj Chander Singh along with Inspectors Excise Arun Kumar & Shadi Lal.
In the process four working stills, more than which are highly hazardous and injurious for health were recovered by the raiding team from State land and later destroyed on spot.
In another raid conducted by Excise sleuths of Akhnoor under the supervision of Tinna Mahajan, Excise and Taxation Officer, City Excise Range, North Jammu conducted raids in villages of Jad, Sohal, Rajechak, Pangiari, Sungal Patoli and Tanda areas of Akhnoor Tehsil.
During the raids two persons were arrested and booked under Section 48 of the Excise Act. Besides nine liters of illicit liquor and about 210 kgs of Lahan was recovered which were destroyed on spot.
The two persons who were arrested include Surjit Sing S/o Khajan Singh of Jad and Kuljeet Kour W/p Jagir Singh of Tanda. The raids were also conducted under the directives of Excise Commissioner Javed Ahmed Khan and supervision of Ganshyam Singh Deputy Excise Commissioner, Executive Jammu.
