Ex-MLA Chopra passes away

JAMMU, Feb 28: Veteran Congress leader and former MLA Om Chopra breathed his last here today.
According to family sources he was 90 and is survived by four daughters and grand children.
Mr Chopra, son of Sunder Dass Chopra was a noted freedom fighter and had participated in Quit India Movement and remained associated with freedom struggle.
He was first elected as MLA in 1983 from Jammu East Constituency on Congress ticket. He served as District president of Congress for longest term and strengthen party at all levels. Father- in- law of former minister, Yogesh Sawhney, Mr Chopra was also a social activist and remained associated with several organizations.
He had lost his wife hardly six months back and was not keeping well. He will be cremated tomorrow at Jogi Gate cremation ground at 2.30 pm.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has condoled the sad demise of Om Chopra. Offering his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, Mr Azad said “My heart goes out to the family of Om Chopra who was a much respected colleague and a very hardworking Congress leader. I share their grief and sorrow.”
Mr Azad said Om Chopra was a hardcore and committed Congress leader who served the party with unflinching commitment and tireless zeal. Calling him a man of conviction, Azad said that Om Chopra’s outstanding services towards the society and the party will be remembered for a long time to come.
“The death of Om Chopra, who served the Congress party as district president for more than 30 years, has created a deep void in the party and we shall take some time to get it filled” he added.
