Essential services can be availed of minus Aadhar card, rules SC

NEW DELHI, Sept 23: Indian citizens who do not have an Aadhar card will not be denied access to gas connections, electricity, water connections and other essential services.

The Supreme Court ruling was delivered by a bench headed by Justice BS Chauhan.

The bench made it clear that Government should not insist on an Aadhar Card to provide essential services including gas connections to the public and it shall remain purely voluntary.

It also ruled that Aadhar Card shall not be issued to illegal migrants and not be made mandatory.

Under hearing was a petition seeking directions to Government to not insist on production of Aadhar Card to provide basic services.

The Judges made it clear that Government cannot treat Aadhar card as mandatory.
