We consider it a very progressive decision of the Education Minister to announce doubling the salary of the teaching staff opting for posting to Ladakh region. It will serve as a strong incentive to young and energetic teaching staff to serve and to earn and make their career as Government employees.
The problem is that Ladakh region which has two districts, namely Leh and Kargil is situated above 11,000 feet sea level and being in the lap of Himalayas, it is a cold region. Road connectivity to the region remains cut off for half of the year. Life almost comes to a standstill during winter. Naturally climatic and physical difficulties discourage teachers from agreeing to be posted there. The result is that the schools and the colleges in Kargil and Leh remain understaffed. The student community suffers on this count. The Education Minister, while presiding over a meeting that was called to discuss the educational issues pertaining to Kargil, took all aspects of the issue into consideration and announced certain decisions that will go in favour of improving educational standard in the entire mountainous and cold region.
Release of 20 lakh rupees will facilitate making additional payments of enhanced salaries to the teachers and also will meet the requirement of filling vacancies in some of the subjects that will be introduced in the Government Degree College Kargil.
It has to be mentioned in passing that only a few days back the Minister in charge of Ladakh Affairs announced that the Union Ministry of Aviation had agreed to introduce air service to Kargil. Once that become a reality, it will be a great push to the development of Kargil in particular its student community. We appreciate the measures of the Education Minister leading to improvement of educational facilities in Ladakh region.
