Enrollment of children aged 6-14 in Govt schools witnesses dip in J&K

ASER notes improvement in basic facilities in schools

SRINAGAR, Jan 18: The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2022 which has been released today noted that in J&K the proportion of children aged 6-14 enrolled in Government schools has decreased from 58.3% in 2018 to 55.5% in 2022.
It stated that the period 2006 to 2014 saw a steady decrease in the proportion of children (aged 6 to 14) enrolled in the Government schools.
In J&K, the ASER 2022 reached 20 districts and a total of 557 villages in J&K. 10,924 households and 21,666 children in the age group 3 to 16 were surveyed, while across the country, it reached 616 districts and a total of 19,060 villages in rural India during which 374,544 households and 699,597 children in the age group 3 to 16 were surveyed.
It stated that the increase in Government school enrollment is visible in almost every State in the country. However, the report said that in J&K, the proportion of children (aged 6 to 14) enrolled in Government schools decreased from 58.3% in 2018 to 55.5% in 2022.
Concerning enrollment in the pre-primary age group, the report stated that across rural India, the proportion of 3-year-olds enrolled in some form of early childhood education stands at 78.3% in 2022, an increase of 7.1 percentage points over 2018 levels.
In J&K, the report stated that in 2022, 63.6% of 3-year-old were enrolled in Anganwadi Centres as compared to 56.7% in 2018. Among 4-year-old, Anganwadi enrollment has increased from 31.8% (2018) to 39.4% (2022).
The report noted that in J&K the proportion of children in Standard I-VIII taking paid private tuition classes increased from 8.8% in 2018 to 13.8% in 2022.
As per the report, in J&K, the proportion of all children enrolled in Standard-V in Government or private schools who can at least read Standard II level text fell from 42.0% in 2018 to 35.2% in 2022.
It said that nationally, children’s basic arithmetic levels have declined over 2018 levels for most grades. “But the declines are less steep and the picture is more varied than in the case of basic reading”
For J&K, it said, the proportion of children in Standard III who can do at least subtraction increased from 36.1% in 2018 to 38.7% in 2022 while the proportion of children in Standard-V who can do division has fallen slightly, from 25.1% in 2018 to 22.4% in 2022.
As per the report, in the UT, the performance of Standard VIII in basic arithmetic has also improved and the proportion of children who can do division has increased slightly, from 32.9% in 2018 to 35.9% in 2022.
The proportion of children in Standard-V in J&K who can read simple English sentences, the report said, has fallen from 48.6% in 2016 to 45.6% in 2022. “Slight decrease is also visible for children in Std. VIII (from 74.9% in 2016 to 71.1% in 2022).”
The report further stated that in J&K, the fraction of schools with usable girls’ toilets increased from 48.2% in 2018 to 53.1% in 2022. “The proportion of schools with drinking water available increased from 54.6% to 69.3%, and the proportion of schools with books other than textbooks being used by students increased from 26.6% to 32.3% over the same period.”
