JAMMU, Apr 28: Former MLA and senior Congress leader, Ashok Kumar has urged upon the Government that salary of contractual lecturers and teaching assistants engaged on academic arrangement in various Government Degree Colleges of J&K should be enhanced as per the guidelines of Supreme Court.
In a handout Kumar said that recent notification issued by the University of Ladakh for engagement of academic lecturers in colleges stated to pay remunerations equivalent to the basic pay of assistant professors (without any allowance) for the engagement period and for teaching assistants it stated that remuneration 15 per cent less than the lecturer will be paid.
The Congress leader called it discrimination as more than 40 per cent of the teaching staff is contractual.
He also claimed that it can hamper the quality of education.
Kumar further said that UGC has taken various steps for improvement of quality in higher education and added that lecturers and teaching assistants who are working in far-flung areas of Jammu province are not getting additional allowances as is given to the lecturers and teaching assistants working in Kashmir province.
