Emergency was blackest day in history of India: BJP

JAMMU, June 26: Terming the emergency as the darkest days in the history of the Independent India State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a programme at Party Headquarters here today recalled the atrocities committed on political opponents by the then authoritarian rule of Mrs Indira Gandhi 40 years ago.
Recalling this black day of June 26 1975 when the emergency was imposed in India and remained in force for 19 months, BJP said it was the darkest period in the post independence history of country.
The BJP leaders said Congress under then Prime Minister  Indira Gandhi,  directed imposition of emergency and suspension of all fundamental rights of citizens in brazen display of autocracy and lust for power.
The programme was attended by large number of party workers and addressed by top leaders of party including Former Union Minister Chaman Lal Gupta, Ashok Khajuria MLC, State Vice-Presidents Col. Uttam Singh and Sat Sharma MLA, BJP Kashmir Cell National Co-Covenor Chander Mohan Sharma, Munish Sharma State general secretary, Rajesh Gupta MLA, Sunil Sethi chief spokesman, Purnima Sharma, Mahila Morcha Pradhan, BJYM State President Dr. Suresh Ajay Magotra.
Speakers also noted with pride the united fight of nation against emergency under dynamic leadership of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain in which whole nation made it known to all world that India will never succumb to dictatorship and autocracy and will guard rights of citizens at all costs
The role played by Jan Sangh in the anti emergency agitation was also noted with pride and it was resolved that BJP will ensure that such like circumstances which imposed emergency will never allowed to be repeated in the  country and that country under dynamic leadership of  Narendra Modi is working to strengthen democratic institutions .
Ashok Khajuria and Prof Gupta who among other leaders were jailed in emergency in the State were highly critical of Congress for its undemocratic policies and autocratic way of functioning. They said by imposing emergency Congress disgraced the institutions of democracy.
Proceedings were conducted by district vice-president Sanjay Baru.
A number of leaders, who were jailed during the emergency, were also felicitated during the programme. They included  Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, Ashok Khajuria, Amarnath Gupta, Sat Pal Grover, Bishamber Mehta, Chander Mohan Sharma, Adv. Vijay Gupta, Murari Lal Balgotra, Sat Sharma (C.A), Subash Jandial, Subash Nitco, Ramesh Gupta, Sat Pal Rathore, Upinder Bhat, Surinder Mohan,  Vinod Sharma,  Darshna Devi,  Parkasho Devi,  Soma Devi.
