JAMMU, May 20: BJP spokesperson and convenor, International Affairs, Gaurav Gupta today strongly criticized Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, terming the statements “reckless, disgraceful and anti-democratic.”
Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s alleged comments describing the Prime Minister, Home Minister and BJP as “traitors,” Gaurav Gupta accused the Congress party of having a history of undermining democracy and constitutional institutions for political interests. He said Congress had no moral authority to lecture others on nationalism or democratic values.
Gupta said the imposition of the Emergency in 1975 under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi remained one of the biggest examples of the Congress party’s “anti-democratic mindset.” He alleged that during the Emergency, civil liberties were suspended, opposition leaders jailed, newspapers censored and democratic institutions weakened.
Targeting the Congress-led UPA regime, Gupta further alleged that the Government had been surrounded by several corruption controversies, including the 2G spectrum allocation case, Commonwealth Games scam and coal allocation issue. He also referred to the National Herald case involving alleged financial irregularities linked to Associated Journals Limited and Young Indian.
The BJP leader said the same Congress leadership, which had faced allegations of corruption, was now attempting to question the patriotism of Prime Minister Modi. He claimed that Modi had strengthened India’s global stature, national security and diplomatic standing through decisive leadership.
Gupta further alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks were aimed at diverting attention from Congress’ electoral setbacks and internal failures. He maintained that insulting the Prime Minister amounted to disrespecting the democratic mandate of the people and urged opposition leaders to maintain dignity and decorum in political discourse.
