Srinagar, Nov 13: An alternative to the traditional winter ‘Hamams’ has entered the market in the form of customized heating blankets capable of heating an entire room within minutes while using minimal energy.
Among the approximately 25 units producing these blankets in Kashmir, one operational unit is situated in the Rangret Industrial Estate, where Nasir Ahmad Bhat’s Dolphin Blankets receive manufacturing orders daily with people trying the alternative to the traditional heating arrangements.
“This concept originates from the USA, where these blankets have been in production since 1940. What’s particularly intriguing is that we customize these heating blankets based on the room’s size, ensuring people can heat their rooms using energy equivalent to that consumed by a light bulb,” Bhat explained. Bhat emphasized that conventional heaters, especially after the installation of smart meters, incur higher energy costs. In contrast, their heating blankets offer a more cost-effective solution. “It’s affordable and effectively keeps people warm in the cold,” he added.
Regarding the material used in these blankets, Nasir mentioned they utilize a specialized heating element consisting of 80% chromium and 20% nickel, coated with Teflon for safety.
“The blankets we produce come with low and high heat settings and are quite safe, consuming only 140 watts of electricity. They can even serve as a replacement for Hamams, which come with their own costs these days,” Bhat stated.
He noted the growth of the sector, with 25 units currently manufacturing these blankets, providing a different heating experience. Additionally, they supply heating blankets to states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and several others in northern India.
In terms of pricing, the blankets start at Rs 750 for a single size and Rs 1500 for a double. “Prices increase with size. Those using Hamams are turning to us for customized blankets for larger rooms as an alternative,” Bhat remarked.
Addressing the demand, he stated they are currently experiencing significant orders, particularly from October through February. “Sales are improving daily, enabling me to provide livelihoods for 12 employees.”
Muhammad Shafique, one of the workers, mentioned their capability is to produce 50 double blankets or 100 single blankets per day. “It’s far superior to a Kangri and a good replacement for the Hamams and people are installing in their houses nowadays,” he expressed.
