SRINAGAR, June 25: Muslims in Kashmir would be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday as Shawaal moon was sighted this evening.
Eid-ul-Fitr marks the conclusion of holy month of Ramadhan and falls on first date of Islamic month of Shawaal. People felt jubilant after learning about the sighting of moon and thanked God for completion of Ramadhan month when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.
Over the past few days, the markets across Kashmir and mainly in Srinagar were abuzz with Eid shoppers. The city commercial hub – Lal Chowk – witnessed huge rush of shoppers including women and children. Markets opened very early this morning and shoppers were busy in purchasing of both eatables as well as other goods.
With only one day left for Eid, the Lal Chowk markets remained jam-packed with shoppers moving from one extreme of the market to another today. Elsewhere in Poloview, Sarai Bala, Maharaj Bazaar, Koker Bazaar and in old city, markets were abuzz with shopping activities. Shoppers from different areas of rural Kashmir also thronged city malls, fashion houses, boutique shops, market places and kiosks across the city markets in huge numbers and shopped till evening.
As shoppers flooded markets, the city roads witnessed intermittent traffic jams. However, unlike past, the traffic cops deployed at key junctions managed to regulate traffic. Markets of Old City including Nowhatta and Maharaj Gunj also witnessed huge rush of shoppers, particularly ladies.
Sources said that there shall be no curfew in any part of downtown city tomorrow and people would be allowed to offer congregational prayers at Eidgah ground. However, no congregation would be allowed at TRC Ground in Civil Line area of city and the same has been conveyed to Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadith (JAH) in view of apprehensions of law and order deterioration.
Police placed Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today under house detention at his Nigeen residence. The Mirwaiz, who is also Valley’s chief cleric, was scheduled to deliver sermon at Eidgah before congregational prayers tomorrow. The police have already detained other separatist leaders including Yasin Malik while Syed Ali Geelani continues to remain under house arrest.
