Effective Flood Management

Sir,
Many parts of the country are flooded forcing the people to move to safer places.Crops spread over lakhs of  hectare of land have been damaged and many cattle have perished.Public Property worth crores of rupees has been destroyed with many roads and railway lines washed away due to incessant rains. Many people have also lost their lives in the floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in these regions. Some others have lost their lives in cloudbursts. The NDRF teams are doing excellent job at ground level, people are not being provided succour and relief in view of the magnitude of the hostile situation with all the major rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna, Brahamputra wrecking havoc and causing destruction along their course.
Though, it is not possible to prevent natural calamities such as floods, droughts, landslides etc.but we can certainly take preventive messures to minimise the loss of life and property. In view of the fact that almost  every year many areas located on the banks of rivers such as Brahamputra  are submerged under water due to floods, the government ought to take measures in advance to minimise the loss of life and property .The departments such as Flood Control Department ought to devise foolproof  short term and longterm flood management strategy in advance to deal with the floods.Plantation drives need to be launched in the catchment areas of the rivers to to enable the land to retain more water in these areas.Awareness needs to be created in people about rainwater harvesting and more ponds need to be dug up to store more rainwater. Ambitious steps such as interlinking of rivers  should be taken to divert excess flood water to other rivers.Desilting of rivers and construction of embankments along the vulnerable points too can help in avoiding the destruction caused due to floods. All this will help in  preventing the displacement and misery of  lakhs of people living in floodprone  areas.
Yours truly,
Ashok Sharma,
Udhampur.
