Ecological degradation

Sir,
Thanks to the Parliamentary panel on Environment and Forests, the thing which to many has been causing worry is the continuing deterioration of our forests, wetlands and environment. In its report on floods in Srinagar and environmental issues in Jammu , the Parliamentary panel has made disturbing revelations. The environment is under great stress and the panel has expressed its concerns about ecological degradation which has taken place on account of unplanned urbanization and encroachment on the wetlands and forests. Recently about forest land encroachment, because of Government’s initiative to arrest the trend has not met with the desired positive response, instead political and religious colours have been attempted to be given to the drive. The Panel has pointed out that to a larger extent this trend is responsible for occurrence of natural calamities in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Our state is fortunate to have the tourism industry as the main industry of generating incomes both in adventure cum pleasure tourism and religious tourism and it is the clean and fresh environment for which this state had been in the forefront to attract tourists but increased pollution, unplanned and haphazard planning, cutting trees for colonies and housing purposes, disappearance of larger chunks of wetlands, ponds, springs, and the polluted waters of the rivers  , the industry may face a setback. It is time all of us, in particular the political leaders really show and feel concern and save this state from further ecological degradation.
Yours etc….
