EC has completely surrendered its independence and authority: Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: Terming the ‘pilgrimage’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last two days as’ an unacceptable use of religion and religious symbols to influence the voting’, senior Congress leader and former Home Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday alleged that the Election Commission had completely surrendered its independence and authority.

In a series of tweets, Mr Chidambaram said, ”polling is over. Now we can say that the ‘pilgrimage’ of the PM in the last two days is an unacceptable use of religion and religious symbols to influence the voting.

Our charge had been that the EC was sleeping on the job. Now, we can go further and say that the EC completely surrendered its independence and authority. Shame!”

The opposition has complained to the EC that the live coverage of the PM’s visit to Kedarnath is a violation of the MCC as it is intended to influence the voters. (AGENCIES)
