Dysfunctional drainage system in Natipora

SRINAGAR, Feb 23: Residents of Iqbal Colony in Natipora continue to struggle with a dysfunctional drainage system that has been an issue for several years.
According to the residents, despite repeated complaints, the problem remains unresolved due to a lack of coordination among various departments, leaving locals to suffer since 2021.
Highlighting the issues faced by the residents, Javid Ahmad Khan, President of the colony, said that a 1.25-kilometer drain was constructed but lacks an outlet.
“Water has seeped under houses, weakening their foundations,” he said.
He referred to the ongoing delays and departmental negligence, stating that despite approaching multiple authorities including R&B, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and even the newly elected Government, no action has been taken.
“A tender worth Rs 12 lakh was issued for the project, but the funds were misused, and residents have not benefited at all,” he alleged.
According to residents, the issue worsens even with the light rain due to which rainwater accumulates in lower areas, forcing people to wear long boots just to step outside.
“Residents have to keep two pairs of shoes, one to wade through the water and another to wear at the office. The situation is unbearable,” said another resident of the colony, Jan Mohammad.
The locals said that the stagnant water and unhygienic conditions have led to health issues, especially among children.
Shabir Ahmad Lone, another resident, shared his struggle. “Every day I have to walk through the water just to leave my house. The road is filled with dump holes, making it even more dangerous.”
President of the colony said that the officials continue to shift responsibility between the departments. “Until the Commissioner, SMC takes action, nothing will change.”
While the concerned officials could not be reached for comments on the issue, the MLA of Chanapora, who had promised to resolve the problem during his Assembly election campaign, also did not respond to repeated calls.
