JAMMU, June 2:  “Save the Birds Day” programme was organized by Dogra Sadar Sabha in collaboration with Wild Life Protection Department, J&K here today.
Gulchain Singh Charak, former Minister & president Dogra Sadar Sabha J&K, Jammu flagged off the procession of the participants along with the officials of the Wild Life Protection Department, J&K headed by  Suresh Sharma, Wild Life Warden, Jammu from Dogra Sadar Sabha Bhawan here.
While launching the programme by handing over one thousand earthen pots to the villagers and colleges/schools students who had come to collect them emphasized the need to save the birds. Birds and wild animals play very important role in the ecology of the area to maintain balance. He exhorted them to carry out the programme with dedication and commitment in whole of the Summer season. Mr Charak appealed to all the people to keep water outside their houses for the birds regularly.
Addressing the gathering Wild Life Warden explained in detail the importance of the day and assured the full cooperation for this noble cause from the department. Hundreds of enthusiastic young people who had come from the rural areas and the students of various schools and colleges of the city, collected the pots to be carried to different locations from where they will further take them to be placed on the trees and near their houses, gardens and common places etc.
Highlighting the importance of  organizing “Saving the Birds Day” an initiative of Dogra Sadar Sabha, Gambhir Dev Singh said that the Sabha had taken this decision about 6 years back when all the ponds had gone dry and birds were dying of thrust. He appealed to the student community and the in-charge of Schools and Colleges to be part of this movement.
The students of colleges and schools participated in hanging the earthen pots for birds in Maharaja Hari Singh Janana Park, Jambu Lochan Park and other important places where all the concerned agencies maintaining the above mentioned places were asked to make the proper arrangements to fill these pots with water regularly every day in Summer months.
Prominent among those who participated in the programme included Dr NK Dogra,  Prem Sagar Gupta, Kulbir Singh, Brig  (Retd) M S Jamwal, Santosh Magotra,  Ghani Sham Singh, Dr S K Digra, Babu Sat Pal and Janak Raj Gorka.
