DSEJ organizes workshop on Prevention of Children Against Sexual Offences

JAMMU, Mar 20: Counselling Cell of the Directorate of School Education Jammu, in collaboration with Department of Psychology University of Jammu and Muktha Foundation, organized a workshop on ‘Prevention of Children Against Sexual Offences’.
Participants were teachers of Jammu district having Masters in Psychology and officials from DIETs of Jammu Division working in Counselling Cells. The aim of the workshop was to sensitize teachers to safeguard childhood against sexual offences so as to create a trained workforce.
“Daily media reports of sexual offences against children have necessitated to sensitizing our teachers and equipping our young kids with skills and knowledge to protect them against sexual offences “said Director School Education, Anuradha Gupta, while taking meeting of the officials.
Experts from Muktha Foundation conducted the workshop whereas Romesh Kumar Sharma, Head Counselling Cell DSEJ acted as moderator. Bengaluru-based Muktha Foundation has launched a nation-wide campaign on ‘Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse’ starting January 1st, 2019, to March 30th, 2019, as part of a continued effort to make child safety a national priority. The experts laid emphasis on primary prevention and early detection of abused cases.
HoD Psychology, Prof Arti Bakshi presented key note address. She talked about the dire need of such sensitization programmes against sexual offences in view of rising sexual offences in the country. She assured long term support to School Education Department in organizing programmes related to child safety, child mental health, child psychology, child well-being.
The speakers comprehensively covered the topics like warning signs of child sexual abuse, Forms prevalence and myths pertaining to CSA, Why children don’t reveal, Tricks abusers use to gain trust of child, Signs that someone could be an abuser, Response to a sexually abused child, POCSO Act and Safety Rules.
A short cartoon movie `Komal’ by Childline India Foundation was also shown to the participants with a direction to repeat the movie screening in their respective clusters and schools. Interactive question and answer session was also held. Handy tips were given to participant to effectively observe warning signs and to effectively respond to abused kids.
Hem Raj Pakhru, Joint Director, presented formal vote of thanks while the welcome was earlier presented by Mohd Latief Choudhary, Joint Director Jammu Samba Kathua.
