The IEDs, with their timers set and packed inside tiffin boxes, were recovered from the Kantowala-Dayaran area of Kanachak in the Akhnoor sector, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Jammu, Mukesh Singh said.
On Monday night, BSF troops resorted to firing briefly along the India-Pakistan border in Kanachak sector after hearing a humming sound which led to a suspicion that a drone was flying around.
A police party was immediately deployed and they followed anti-drone standard operating procedure in the area.
Around 11 pm, security forces noticed the drone in the Dayaran area of Kanachak and fired at it again, the ADGP said.
“The payload attached was brought down but the drone could not be shot,” he said, adding the IEDs were diffused through a controlled mechanism by the Bomb Disposal Squad.
SSP Jammu Chandan Kohli said each IED weighed two kg and had timer mechanism.
The consignment was sent from across the border by Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants at the behest of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Kohli said.
He added that searches are being conducted to ascertain the persons who had to collect the consignment on being dropped by the drone. Searches are being conducted, he said.
The SSP Jammu said a First Information Report (FIR) No. 58/2022 under Sections, 4 and 6 of Explosive Substances Act and 13, 16 and 18 Unlawful Activities (prevention) Act has been registered at Kanachak Police Station.
He urged the people to keep strict vigil in their areas and inform police if they find any suspicious object.
Sources said a major plot by the militants, backed by Pakistan, to target Shri Amarnath Ji yatra with magnetic Improvised Explosive Devices has been thwarted by the BSF and police.
There were Intelligence inputs that the militants could target the yatra vehicles using magnetic IEDs or sticky bombs and, in view of this, security forces have been maintaining very high alert.
Only a day before, Jammu Police had recovered a sticky bomb and arrested three militants.
