KATHUA, Nov 13: The drivers and conductors at Lakhanpur Excise Toll Post today staged a protest demonstration at Lakhanpur against the refusal of the authorities to accept banned currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination.
The protesting drivers and conductors demanded that the authorities should accept the old currency notes as is being done by petrol pumps, Railway and Department of Civil Aviation for booking of tickets.
Non clearance of the vehicles at Toll Post also resulted in huge traffic jam at Lakhanpur.
They said that the transporters with goods for State are put to hardships by Excise officials who don’t accept the old notes. “We are unable to pay them the money as there is shortage of currency notes of Rs 50 and 100 denomination and people have to wait in long queues in front of banks and ATMs to withdraw money. Being in travel we can’t afford to remain in long queues to withdraw the money said agitating drivers and conductors.
The protesters also demanded the lifting of Toll Post at Lakhanpur as has been done in other parts of country. The issue was also raised by Chamber of Commerce and Industry with Union Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh and Chander Parkash Ganga and its leaders demanded that the relaxation of paying toll through old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 be extended to Lakhanpur Toll Post also and the drivers may not be subjected to any more harassment at the Toll Post.
