JAMMU, Aug 6: The sleuths of Special Operation Group (SOG) Jammu and cops from Bahu Fort Police Station carried out surgical strike against narcotics terrorism and arrested a driver along with his associate along with 51 kilograms of Afghanistan smuggled high grade heroin valuing Rs 250 crores in the international market.
This was stated by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Zone Dr SD Singh Jamwal, while interacting with media persons at Police Control Room (PCR), here this evening.
Divulging the details, IGP said that working over specific leads over narcotics smuggling from Kashmir to other parts of India including Punjab, New Delhi, etc, the sleuths of SOG Jammu and cops from Bahu Fort Police Station laid a joint naka at Rajeev Nagar Chowk and signaled a truck bearing registration number JK02AD-3965 loaded with paper cartons for checking.

On seeing police cops, the driver accelerated the vehicle and tried to escape, but the alert cops intercepted the vehicle after a brief chase.
“During checking, the cops recovered 51 kilograms of heroin valuing Rs 250 crores in the international market from the false ceiling created on the back side of the driver’s seat, which opens after unloading the truck”, IGP said, adding that the driver along with his associates have been arrested on the spot.
The arrested persons have been identified as Gurjeet Singh (driver), son of Balbir Singh, a resident of Digiana Ashram and Ravi Kumar, son of Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Raipur Satwari.
He disclosed that the seized heroin was smuggled from Afghanistan and was of high grade quality valuing Rs 250 crores in the international market. The arrested accused were smuggling the consignment from Handwara towards Punjab, he said, adding that this is the biggest catch ever in the history of Jammu.
This huge catch of narcotics is a one step ahead of the District Police Jammu in the ‘Operation Sanjeevani’, IGP added.
A case under FIR Number 212/18 under Section 8/21/29/60 Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Bahu Fort and investigation started.
Police team led by SHO Bahu Fort Inspector Parvez Sajjad and assisted by Incharge Bhatindi Police Post SI Rakesh Roshan made the arrest under the supervision of SDPO East Vipan Chandra, Incharge SP South Vinay Kumar and SSP Jammu Vivek Gupta
“This is first case against the arrested persons. We are on the job to collect the details from other districts to ascertain the details of the cases registered against them if any”, IGP said while responding to a query, adding that involvement of others can’t be ruled out at this time as the case is under investigation.
To another query, IGP said that J&K is becoming a route of smuggling the narcotics smuggled from Afghanistan and Pakistan to other parts of India including Punjab and New Delhi.
“90 per cent of heroin is being smuggled from Afghanistan and Pakistan in India with the involvement of Pakistan agencies”, IGP Dr SD Singh said, adding that strict vigil is being kept to foil these kind of narcotics smuggling incidents.
