Driver arrested with 28 kg poppy straw

RAMBAN, Jan 6: Police arrested a driver along with 28 kilograms of poppy straw from Tethar Gundl area, falling under the jurisdiction of Jawahar Tunnel police post.
As per police sources, on specific information, a team from Jawahar Tunnel police post laid a naka near Tethar Gundl area and signaled a truck bearing registration number PB11BN-0419 to stop for checking.
On seeing police team, the driver accelerated the vehicle and tried to escape, but the cops chased and intercepted the vehicle near some distance from the naka point.
During checking, police recovered 28 kilograms of poppy straw from the vehicle, which was concealed in two packets. The driver was arrested and the vehicle was seized.
The accused has been identified as Onkar Singh, son of Darshan Singh of Punjab. He was carrying the poppy straw to his native village for sale among the people to gain illegitimate profits.
A case under FIR Number 3/16 under Section 8/15 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substa-nces (NDPS) Act has been registered at Banihal police station and investigation started.
Police team led by Incharge Jawahar Tunnel police post SI Mohammad Irfan Wani made the arrest under the supervision of SHO Banihal Inspector Nazir Ahmed, SDPO Banihal Mohammad Rafiq and SSP Ramban Randeep Kumar.
