JAMMU, Apr 26: A day-long cardiac awareness and health check-up camp was conducted at Sarv Shakti Chandi Mata Mandir, Dhammi Nagrota, Jammu, by Head, Department of Cardiology, GMCH Jammu, Dr Sushil Sharma, focusing on prevention and early detection of cardiovascular diseases.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sushil Sharma highlighted the increasing burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), terming them a leading cause of death and disability globally. He noted that heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, and heart failure are affecting people across urban and rural areas alike.
Stressing prevention as the most effective approach, he explained the role of risk factors, classified as non-modifiable-such as age, gender, genetics, and family history-and modifiable factors including smoking, unhealthy diet, obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
Dr Sharma pointed out that many cardiovascular conditions develop silently, with hypertension and diabetes often remaining undiagnosed until complications arise. He underlined the importance of regular health screenings, including monitoring of blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipid profile, for timely intervention.
He advised adopting healthier lifestyles by quitting smoking, reducing salt intake, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining healthy body weight, and managing stress. He also stressed the need to inculcate healthy habits among children and adolescents through educational institutions.
Highlighting broader measures, Dr Sharma spoke about the role of Government initiatives, healthcare institutions, and community-based outreach programmes in strengthening preventive healthcare.
The temple management committee members, including Sanjay Gandotra, Gourav Bhasin, Balwan Singh, Ram Gopal, Bharat Singh, Vikram Singh, and Parveen Singh, were present on the occasion.
The camp witnessed participation of Dr Venkatesh Yellapu, Dr Bhola Kumar, Dr Aditya Sharma, Dr Adarsh Sharma, along with paramedics and volunteers namely Rajkumar, Raghav Rajput, Gourav Sharma, Vikas Kumar, Rajinder Singh, Maninder Singh, Mohd Altaf, Rahul Vaid, Mukesh Kumar, Gokul Jamwal, Shubham Sharma, Anmol Singh, Jatin Bhasin and Mukhtar Malik.
