Dr Karan Singh terms Indo-Nepal stand off as serious diplomatic lapse

JAMMU, June 15: Terming the Indo-Nepal stand off as serious diplomatic lapse, the former Sadar-e-Riyasat and scion of erstwhile Royal Dogra family, Dr Karan Singh has feared that the consequences will not be favourable for the people of this neighbouring country.
“Whatever impact this move may or may not have on India, I fear that the consequences for Nepal will not be favourable for the people of that beautiful country,” he said, in a statement, issued here today.
Also hitting out at the Central Government for not addressing the issue timely, Dr Karan Singh said that India should never have allowed the situation to deteriorate like this. ” Although the dispute in question is a long standing one and it was, if I recall correctly, raised by Nepal in November last year, surprisingly we did not seem to take the matter seriously,” he said and added that India should have immediately initiated Foreign Secretary level talks and then, if necessary, raised them to the level of Foreign Minister or even the Prime Ministers.
As one who has been closely associated both personally and politically with Nepal over several decades, Dr Karan Singh expressed his sense of deep regret and dismay that Prime Minister Oli has moved his country into what can only be described as an irreversible confrontational posture vis-à-vis India despite the profound social, cultural, religious, economic and political relations between the two countries that go back to many centuries.
