NEW DELHI, Aug 2 : Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, MoS in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Space & Atomic Energy, has sought personal intervention of Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda for withdrawing the order cancelling stoppage of Hemkunt Express Train at Hiranagar Railway Station in Jammu & Kashmir.
Dr Singh today also wrote a formal letter to Railway Minister citing the importance of this train which is popular among passengers undertaking religious pilgrimage to Haridwar for performing the last rites of their deceased family members and relations. In addition, the train also facilitates the journey for those who travel for holy bath in river Ganga on the occasion of Sombati Amabas, he said.
Dr Singh said that 14609 UP / 14610 DN Hemkunt Express Train had been granted a stoppage at Hiranagar with effect from 26th January, 2009 and this arrangement has continued uninterrupted for nearly five years, but now, the Railway authorities seem to have conveyed to the Station Superintendent at Hiranagar Railway Station that the stoppage of the train will be cancelled with effect from 30th September, 2014 which implies that the facility available to this entire area of Tehsil Hiranagar and Billawar will stand suddenly withdrawn.
Appreciating the people-friendly Budget and the new railway trains announced by Mr Gowda, Dr Jitendra Singh said the people of the area look forward to Mr Gowda’s personal intervention in the matter which would be in keeping with the Government’s policy of enlarging and facilitating railway network across the country.
Dr Jitendra Singh recalled that on July 23, 2012 the Ministry of Railway had declared Railway Station Hiranagar in the category “Model Station” and therefore from that point of view also, this Station deserves special attention.
