NEW DELHI, Sept 21 : Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Space and Atomic Energy, today announced the launch of “Cambridge-India Ramanujan Fellowship” for outstanding students from India to pursue doctoral degree in Cambridge in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Starting from October next year, five fellowships will be awarded which will cover the entire cost of undertaking doctoral study at Cambridge University, he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh made this announcement after a meeting with the Vice Chancellor of University of Cambridge Prof. Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, who called on him here today to work out new measures for research collaboration between India and Cambridge.
During the meeting, Dr Singh described Cambridge as an historic benchmark of academics across the world and said, generations of literate Indians have not only graduated from Cambridge but have also taken lifelong pride in being the Cambridge alumni.
He suggested the Cambridge Vice Chancellor to consider joint investment with Indian Government in research projects in a bid to attract the best scientists from Cambridge to Indian institutions.
He also mooted the idea of a partnership between the Cambridge and India’s leading institutions in order to boost agricultural bio-technology to serve the cause of food security and rural development. Prof Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, the Vice Chancellor, responded to Dr Jitendra Singh by appreciating his enthusiasm about these challenges and said “we are delighted to work on putting into practice with Indian partners these exciting initiatives proposed by the Minister”.
