JAMMU, Mar 8: As a part of the campaign to spread awareness about Diabetes among people living in rural and remote areas and to provide blood test facilities in peripheral regions where the health care infrastructure is lacking, Diabetes Care Foundation(DCF),a registered NGO, today organized a Diabetes Awareness cum detection camp at Hiranagar town under the supervision of Dr Jitendra Singh, renowned Diabetologist and National Professor of Diabetes, who led a team of medical specialists to provide free consultation to the needy and the poor.Free blood tests were done and free medicine for one month was provided to over three hundred patients.
It may be pertinent to mention that within last two months, similar camps have been conducted by the DCF in district Kathua and district Udhampur, and a series of such camps for district Doda and district Kishtwar have been planned in the coming months.
While counselling the villagers about Diabetes control and prevention ,Dr Jitendra Singh said that Diabetes, which was earlier mostly confined to big cities and towns, has now rapidly spread in rural areas also and for this,to a great extent the people living in villages are themselves responsible because they have given up their traditional rural lifestyle and instead adopted the urban lifestyle .He said the people living in villages have also now developed same sendentary habits as people living in big cities and have much lowered level of physical activity. In addition, they are also now consuming the same processed or junk food which is consumed in the cities,he said.Besides, due to constraints of modern life and competition ,there is now a higher degree of Stress even among people in small towns and villages,he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh said even though new options for Diabetes treatment are becoming available each day,the basic “Mantra” is to revert back to the oriental lifestyle followed by our ancestors. He said by leading a regulated lifestyle and with control of parameters ,a Diabetic can infact live healthier and longer than a non-diabetic.
While prominent activists Rajiv Jasrotia and Rashpal Verma visited the camp, the logistic support was provided by Varun Malhotra and Dr Badyal. Medical check-up was carried out by Dr Jitendra Singh with the assistance of Dr Sandeep Dhar and Dr Varun Gupta. Omkesh, Abhimanyu, Akhil and Manoj helped in conducting blood tests.
