SAMBA, May 10: Exhorting the academicians to work hard for making the Central University of Jammu an institution  of Excellence, Union Minister of State in PMO with independent charge of North Eastern States, Dr Jitendra Singh today announced that  three new departments including Space Technology, Earth Sciences, Atomic  Energy will start functioning in the University from this Summer.
During his maiden visit to the newly constructed university campus at Bagla Samba along with Minister of Industries and Commerce, Chander Parkash Ganga,  Dr Jitendra Singh said the courses in these streams will be started from next academic session.
He while addressing the galaxy of faculty members and non teaching staff of the University, he said very few options were available to the students in these streams all over the country.
With opening of the departments in these streams the University will be known in certain areas all over the country. He urged the faculty as well as students to make the University an institute of excellence in higher education so that the area should be known by its name as Khadkpur is known by the name of IIT Khadkpur.
He said opening of the Department of Atomic Energy this year will be a tribute to Dr Home Baba the founder of Baba Atomic Institute and Research Mumbai to mark the Platinum Jubilee of the Institute.
He said India is known for its research in Earth Sciences and besides these streams, the departments of Skill Development, humanity etc will also start functioning. He announced that six departments will start functioning from the newly constructed camps from this Summer.
The Minster urged the University authorities to adopt the concept of lectures by non faculty and if feasible make 100 percent residential facilities available to faculty and students within campus.
Assuring full support to the University he emphasized that University should be made more visible among the people by visiting schools and colleges so that people should come to know about its existence and importance. The University should launch such courses which are more renowned world over, he added.
Dr Singh said “to make the people know about the existence of the University you have to shout from the roof top and work with dedication to make it a distinguished and glorious institute”, .
He said every research project taken up by the University should have social applicability and economic viability.
He said this institute should grow so fast by giving emphasis on quality education and quality research that in 2016 it should not only emerge as a centre of attention in the State but in entire world.
Dr Singh said the University should be made of such a level that we all will have a pride of having such an institute of excellence in our region.
Speaking on the occasion Minister of Industries and Commerce Chander Parkash Ganga assured the University for complete support from the State in every sphere. He said with the academic, skill development of the students is also important and his Ministry would be happy to organize such skill development training programmes in the campus.
Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Ashok Aima gave a brief account of the development work in the University and informed the gathering that the number of applicants for admission to the various programmes of the University has increased three fold. He complimented Dr Singh for taking keen interest in the development of the University. He also made a mention about signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) among three Central universities i.e Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir and Jammu.
Prof Lokesh Verma, Academic Coordinator and Head of the Department of Education Students Coordinated the proceedings of the programme and Jit Singh Registrar, Central University extended the vote of thanks.
Earlier Executive Engineer of the University Er R P Gupta briefed Dr Singh about the ongoing developmental activities.
