JAMMU, July 17: Dr Badri Nath Kalla ,a renowned Sanskrit scholar of national fame, a reputed linguistic, an acknowledged’ researcher, a known teacher and a famous writer, passed away at Faridabad, Haryana yesterday. He was 82.
He was thoroughly conversant and hugely knowledgeable with Kashmiri, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu besides English. He has written many books in different languages. Notable amongst them are Shaivite tradition in Kashmir, Buddhism in Kashmir and Vitasta Mahatmaya. Vitastaya Mahatmaya is a research book, which received acclaim at the national level. His numerous write ups in Hindi, Sanskrit , Kashmiri and English centered around the different aspects of Kashmir, which eloquently speak of his immense love and adoration for his mother land.
He was also a reputed authority of Sharda script at national level. He was also an ace Sanskrit poet and writer not only of Kashmiri but of the country. His Sanskrit poem eulogizing his country won him the prestigious President’s Gold Medal.
He was also a part of the Editorial Board of the Kashmiri dictionary in Nastaliq during his service at the J&K Cultural Academy. He also worked at the Department of the Central Asian Studies, Kashmir University. Besides he was on the teaching faculty of the P.G.Department of Kashmiri, Kashmir University.
He also taught at the Sanskrit Department, Delhi University. With his demise not only Kashmir but the entire Sanskrit landscape of the country has become poor.
