Dozens injured as Police foil Muharram procession

Srinagar, Aug 29: Police fired pellets to foil a Muharram procession in Bemina area of Srinagar injuring dozens of mourners some of them critically.
Authorities had banned Muharram processions in view of COVID-19 but Shia mourners defying the restrictions carried out Muharram processions in Budgam, Bemina and several other places.
However, at Bemina near Hamdani Colony, Police intercepted the mourners who pelted stones at Police leading to din dong battles.
Police fired pellets in which dozens of mourners were injured and some of them have been hit by pellets in their eyes.
Earlier this week, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, P K Pole imposed restrictions on all religious processions and gatherings in all districts of Kashmir.
During the meeting, the Shia Anjumans extended their full support to the administration with assurance that no procession or any other outside gathering shall be conducted during these days.
Divisional Commissioner had sought support from these religious bodies and urged them to sensitize people about avoiding all religious processions and gatherings in wake of COVID-19.
