LEH, July 18: The foundation stone of much awaited Controlled Atmosphere Storage and Cold Storage facility was laid by the Minister for Cooperatives and Ladakh Affairs Chhering Dorje here today.
Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC, Leh Dr Sonam Dawa Lonpo, all Executive Councillors, MLA Leh Nawang Rigzin Jora, DC Leh Parasana Ramaswamy G, SSP, Leh T Gyalpo, Councillors, members of Farmers Cooperative Societies and District Officers at Agling Leh were present on the occasion.
Minister Chhering Dorjey elaborated that the farmers will be benefited a lot as this storage facility is not only going to facilitate regular vegetable supply to the Army, but will also be capable of meeting all the vegetable and fruit produce demands of the hotels, guest houses and general public mainly during spring season when there is non-availability of vegetables and fruits due to the closure of highways.
Minister directed the engineers of the PWD for proper implementation of work on this project and its early completion.
Remembering the extraordinary work of late Aba Rigzin Kalon for taking the initiative of starting of the Farmers Cooperative Association decades ago, Minister said “we need to carry forward the legacy for the benefit of the farmers and that we need to recognize his tremendous effort”.
Dr Sonam Dawa Lonpo stressed upon the executing agency-PWD for the earliest completion of the project so that the farmers will be benefited from this cold storage sooner.
Nawang Rigzin Jora speaking on the occasion revealed that he had sent the members of the 13 Finance Commission to Leh during his ministerial tenure, but at the same time expressed sadness on the fact that no further step was taken on this project.
Talking about the various contributions of late Aba Kalon, he said that Aba Kalon was not only visionary about the future of farmers, he was also a guiding light for the Ladakhi society at large.
On the occasion, President Farmers Cooperative Association Angchuk Kalon expressed hope for early completion of the structure.
Superintending Engineer PWD Tashi Chombel gave an introductory note about the salient features of the cold storage.
Earlier, Deputy Registrar Cooperative Societies presented the welcome speech.
