Dogras should not forget contribution of theatre: Balwant Thakur

JAMMU, Mar 26: World Theatre Day is a celebration for those who can see the value and importance of this great art from “Theatre” and it acts as a wakeup call for Governments, politicians and institutions which have yet not recognized its (Theatre’s) value and potential for overall socioeconomic cultural development.
This was stated by Balwant Thakur, Cultural Diplomat of India to South Africa while addressing the world online on the eve of World Theatre Day at Johannesburg.
In wake of COVID-19 outbreak the entire theatre community including International Theatre Institute has decided to celebrate this day on-line.
Referring to Jammu in particular Thakur said that people out here need to take pride in the fact that it is theatre which gave this region a new cultural, linguistic and intellectual identity.
“Dogras for that matter should not forget the contribution of theatre which took Dogri to Russia, UK, Germany, South Africa, UAE, Hungary, Poland and represented in world occasions like Frankfurt Frankfurt International Theatre Festival, World Experimental Theatre Festival and Theatre Olympics,” he maintained complementing to all those who worked selflessly and tirelessly to keep this amazing art alive.
Thakur also said that international days are marked to educate public on issues of concern, to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.
He said that each international day provides the community an opportunity to organize activities related to the theme and create public awareness on the same.
“In the hours of crises which the world is facing today in wake of COVID-19 outbreak, it becomes the larger responsibility of the creative community to sensitize public about the possible threat through their creative mediums,” he said.
