Junior doctors of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC), held a peaceful token protest this afternoon and announced to observe full day strike tomorrow. A large number of junior doctors this afternoon assembled in front of Out Patient Department of GMC Jammu under the aegis of Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) and staged a peaceful protest to express their solidarity with doctors of West Bengal.
Holding placards with slogans like “Stop violence against doctors”, “I protest attacks on doctors” and “Save the saviors” in their hands, the junior doctors demanded security for the doctors and pressed for more making stringent laws to protect the on-duty doctors from such assault.
There must be zero tolerance for those who attack doctors. The offence must be non-bailable. We want a stricter law in this regard,” said a junior doctor at the protest site. “We are healers, not killers. People must show somerespect. Today it happened in West Bengal, tomorrow it can happen in other states too. We want justice for those who were attacked there. We want the Government to take stern action to stop such violence,” said another doctor.
Condemning the brutal attack on two resident doctors in NRS Medical College, Kolkata, Dr Amit Kumar, president RDA GMC Jammu said that they have unanimously decided to go on one-day strike tomorrow. He said they will shut their services in OPDs and OTs in GMC Jammu and all associated hospitals.
Meanwhile, doctors across the Valley today protested in solidarity with the fellow doctors who were allegedly attacked and seriously injured following a patient’s death at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, with doctors also demanding immediate law to be brought in to curb violence against doctors at their workplaces.
The call for protests, without affecting the emergency services, was given by the United Residents and Doctors Association India, which was followed by the Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK), which had asked the doctors across the State to observe Black Band protests in solidarity with the fellow doctors. Doctors were seen wearing black bands during work in Leh, Ganderbal, Kalaroos including all other Government-run healthcare facilities in Kashmir.
President, DAK Dr Suhail Naik told Excelsior that the acts of hooliganism against any doctor while discharging their duties were unacceptable and that they demand that the Government should bring in a law that will curb the violence against doctors in the State as well as in the country.
Condemning the Kolkata incident, Doctors Association Jammu (DAJ) has announced to observe a symbolic shutdown of OPDs for 2 hours on Saturday. “We doctors of J&K are standing with our brethren in West Bengal. Time and again the demand for making assault on doctors at work place a non-bailable offence has been submitted to concern authorities but no substantial action has been taken,” said DAJ president, Dr Balvinder Singh.
Jammu Doctors Forum (JDF), while expressing their deep concerned over assault on 2 junior doctors by Bangladeshi goons, said that Jammu and Kashmir doctor community has already met with such behavior from the mob. “JDF and other doctors’ bodies have shown its concern and represented many occasions to the concerned authorities but only a knee jerk response is shown by them, and no concrete policy has been adopted,” said JDF president, Dr Satya Dev Gupta and demanded any offense on the medical personnel should be made a non-available offense.
