DJMC organizes interactive session with media students at IUST

AWANTIPORA, June 2: An interactive session organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), was held here today.
During the session, the media students interacted with senior Indian Information Service (IIS) officer, Ghulam Abbas.
The programme was held under the patronage of Vice Chancellor, Prof Shakil Ahmad Romshoo.
Welcoming the guest, Head of the Department, Dr Rabia Noor, highlighted the importance of acquainting media students with government media organisations and the role of the Indian Information Service.
In his address, Ghulam Abbas highlighted the pivotal role of Government communication in strengthening the interface between the Government of India and citizens.
He explained that effective communication is a two-way process that not only informs the public but also facilitates the collection of feedback, thereby contributing to responsive governance and informed policymaking.
Providing an overview of the communication architecture of the Government of India, Abbas elaborated on the multifaceted responsibilities of IIS officers in the areas of media relations, public outreach, information dissemination, digital communication and strategic public engagement.
Speaking on the occasion, Dean of Students, Dr Monisa Qadri emphasised that communication in the contemporary governance landscape has evolved into a specialised and strategic discipline requiring intellectual depth, professional competence and ethical responsibility.
She remarked that the interaction reflected the department’s commitment to strengthening industry-academia linkages and nurturing a generation of informed, responsible and effective communicators.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Dr Haifaa Mohammad Ahsan, Assistant Professor, DJMC. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Arif Nadaf, Assistant Professor, DJMC. Dr Mujeeb Liyakat and Dr Sayar Ahmad Mir were also present during the session.
