JAMMU, Nov 8: Divisional Commissioner Shantmanu today inaugurated two-day Red Cross Mela organized by NSS and Red Cross Units of Government College for Women (GCW) in College premises.
Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the GCW Gandhi Nagar, Hony. Secretary, Regional Red Cross Society, Jammu, R C Puri and Cultural Officer Information Department Raman Joshi besides faculty members, parents and students in large numbers were also present on the occasion.
The programme began by lighting the traditional lamp by the chief guest and other dignitaries followed by welcome address by Dr. Kiran Bakshi.
After inspecting 55 stalls installed by the different departments and students of Government College for Women Gandhi Nagar, Divisional Commissioner offered his full co-operation to organize such events for the welfare of the society.
He said that the objective of organizing the Red Cross Mela was to create awareness among the general masses regarding Red Cross Society and generate funds for the welfare activities of the society.
He stressed for greater involvement of social organizations and youth in extending service to downtrodden and those facing distress due to manmade or natural calamities besides providing services to destitute, orphans and needy people.
In her welcome address, Dr. Kiran Bakshi urged students to live a life like a true saint who sacrifices all his life for the welfare of others. This mela is an epitome of a social responsibility which blends all the human values to metamorphise life into a higher level. She also stressed that this mela is also a  step towards nation building and inculcation of managerial, organizational and entrepreneur skills amongst the students.
A cultural programme was presented by the students of the college and artists of the Information Department, Jammu on the occasion. Variety of stalls, traditional food items, jewellery, cosmetics, handicrafts, games, various rides, musical bonanza etc. are the main attractions of mela.
To make the event more attractive, various Government and private schools and other organizations would put up Joy Rides and organize Magic Show, cultural items, Photo Exhibitions and Bhajan Sandha etc. Inter school dance competition, open song competition, Baby Show, BSF, CRPF, JKP Bands, Sham-e-Gazal, Photo Exhibition etc would be some other highlights of the Mela.
