JAMMU, Dec 17: Veteran Dogri writer Dhiyan Singh and Bashir Bhadarwahi, have been awarded this year’s prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for their literary works in Dogri and Kashmiri languages, respectively.
Total six books of short stories, six of poetry, four of novels, two books each of essays, criticism and plays and one of memoirs in different Indian languages have won the Sahitya Akademi Award this year.
Dhian Singh has bagged the Sahitya Akademi Award in Dogri for his poetry anthology ‘Parchhamen Di Lo’. A native of village Bateda, near Jammu, the 76 years old Dhiyan Singh, who retired as District Education Planning Officer, has published more than 21 books in Dogri. His literary oeuvre includes poetry, essays and satire. As a cultural activist, he has made great contribution in reviving the folk art forms like Bhaakh and Rut Rade.
Bashir Ahmad Khateeb, popularly known by his literary name Bashir Bhadarwahi, has bagged Sahitya Akademi award for his work of criticism in Kashmiri titled ‘Jamis Ta Kasheeri Manz Kashir Natia Adabuk Tawareekh’. Born in 1935 at Bhadarwah, Bashir Bhadarwahi served in State Education Department and retired as District Education Officer. He has been writing prose and poetry in Kashmiri and Urdu languages since 50 years. He has published more than six books which include poetic anthologies, criticism, travelogue and history of Bhadarwah.
