The Railways Ministry has admitted that deterioration has crept into rail service and it needs to be addressed. Food supplied in the railway is sub-standard not worth to be accepted. Though there are clear rules that the food served in the railways has to be inspected by concerned sanitary staff but seldom do they inspect it and report if these are sub standard. It reflects that the administration is either inefficient or that there is some sort of connivance at the food supplied. For fear of infection and sub standard, passengers generally are not inclined to take the food in the railways. This is a serious reflection on the services provided by the railways.
Again, there is lack of responsibility on the part of railway authorities in maintenance and upkeep of electric supply, air conditioning, fans, windows, seating, toilet upkeep and other facilities. Why should deterioration creep in when there is adequate staff and all pre-requisites made available by the Railways Ministry? It speaks of inefficiency and irresponsibility on the part of railway functionaries. Enhancement of rail fare should be equaled by better facilities and services. In passing, we may also once again draw the attention of the Northern Railways authorities about the dismal and obnoxious condition of Jammu Railway Station. It is more like a ruined village than a well maintained railway station. So many promises and commitments have been made by the Northern Railways authorities of changing the face of Jammu Railway Station but nothing has happened.
