SRINAGAR:Despite wet weather and forecast for more rain and snow from Thursday, Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic.
Meanwhile, the 86-km-long historic Mughal road remained closed for the ninth day on Thursday due to snowfall. The road is seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which connects Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch.
The national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir, was closed on Thursday due to fresh snowfall since early this morning.
A traffic police official said that despite rain on this side of the Jawahar tunnel and cloudy weather in Ramban area, Kashmir highway was through. “Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) will ply from both sides,” he said.
Meanwhile, over 8000 Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs), including about 6000 trucks loaded with fruit, stranded on this side of the tunnel, will be allowed to move towards Jammu from 1200 hrs. However, no HMV will be allowed from opposite direction, he said.
The Traffic official said there was fresh snowfall on historic Mughal road since early this morning. The road is closed for the past eight days due to accumulation of several feet of snow. The district authorities have already started snow clearance operation.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed for traffic on Thursday due to fresh snowfall at Meenmarg and Zojila pass since early this morning. Traffic has been suspended as a precautionary measure, he said. (AGENCIES)
