JAMMU, Apr 3: A deputation of Digiana residents led by social activist Parvinder Singh Happy met the Executive Engineer (Xen) of Irrigation Division 2, highlighting concerns over large piles of de-silting waste left unattended along the canal banks in Digiana.
Submitting a memorandum, the delegation stressed the health hazards and environmental risks posed by the accumulation of waste and demanded strict enforcement of disposal norms. The deputation pointed out that improper disposal of de-silting waste, which includes mud, plastic and other non-biodegradable materials, has led to respiratory issues, insect breeding and pollution of the canal ecosystem.
Additionally, they emphasized that contractors responsible for clearing the waste are failing to comply with contractual obligations, worsening the situation. The delegation demanded immediate removal of waste from locations such as Digiana Pully, Akalikour Singh Nagar, Green Avenue, Digiana Ashram and Digiana Camp.
They also called for strict action against non-compliant contractors, regular monitoring of de-silting operations, and long-term measures such as installing waste bins along the canal, conducting awareness campaigns on responsible waste disposal, and coordinating with municipal authorities for regular garbage collection.
Responding to the concerns, the Xen assured that waste removal would be completed by tomorrow, with Assistant Engineer Vishal Sharma personally overseeing the cleanup. The assurance has provided temporary relief to residents, though concerns remain about sustainable waste management strategies.
The deputation, which included Narinder Singh Neetu, Satnam Singh Vicky, Harpreet Singh, Gurjeet Singh Geenu, Harjeet Singh, and Tajinder Singh, reiterated the need for continuous efforts to maintain cleanliness and prevent waste accumulation in the future.
