Deplorable treatment to Dogra culture, heritage unacceptable: DSS

JAMMU, Jan 29: About 90 prominent intellectuals from different parts of the Jammu have expressed deep anguish over the deplorable treatment being meted out to the historical monuments, cultural heritage and ancient records of the Dogras and requested the Lt Governor in a memorandum to look into the continuing disintegration of the symbols of their precious heritage, denting of their radiant identity and ignoring of their sentiments.
Addressing a press conference here today, Gulchain Singh Charak, president Dogra Sadar Sabha said that the conclusions arrived at in the meeting included issues pertaining to conservation of rich heritage, especially expediting the conservation work of the historic Mubarak Mandi Complex as per approved conservation plan and promotion of Jammu city as a cultural tourism destination.
He stressed the measures for stabilizing the slopes supporting the heritage structures on the Tawi river side of the complex, restoration and display of the rare collection of paintings of the world famous Basohli School of Miniatures, in a scientific manner along with other royal artifacts kept in the Dogra Art Museum and proper preservation of the centuries old rare manuscripts and other historic documents kept in the State Archives.
It was stressed that the Governing body of the Mubarak Mandi Heritage Society be reconstituted by including non-official members. The memorandum also invited urgent attention towards the various memorials including proper maintenance of the `Balidan Stambh’, Park with Gen Zorawar Singh’s statue and upkeep of the Jambulochan Park. It was stressed that round the year access to the historic memorial of Raja Jambulochan as also to Gandhi Bhawan and Zanana Park be provided for general public.
Charak said it has also been conveyed that Dogra sentiments were deeply hurt by the unprecedented departure from established norms by IIT Jammu when it took the decision to adopt Pakol caps and Pherans as the attire for its first convocation. It was requested that a dress code for convocations in all Educational institutions may be adopted on the lines as prevalent in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir. He said guidelines be issued to the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages to depict Dogra Art and Culture in the J&K Tableaux in the Republic Day Parade and to include artists/items from Jammu in all cultural troupes deputed for official functions outside the UT. He said Door Darshan Kendra, Jammu may be strengthened and a Duggar Channel be started for creation and telecast of content in Dogri.
